Proud to See Malaysia in the Global Spotlight

As a Malaysian, seeing the video of former U.S. President Donald Trump dancing to local music during his visit to Malaysia truly filled me with pride. The clip, which went viral across multiple social media platforms with nearly 38 million views, did more than just entertain — it showcased Malaysia’s warmth, hospitality, and vibrant culture to the world.

So often, global headlines about Malaysia focus on politics or economics, but this moment was different. Here, we saw an American president — one of the most powerful figures in the world — genuinely engaging with our culture. The fact that he smiled, danced, and interacted warmly with the people around him sent a strong message: Malaysia is a nation that welcomes everyone with open arms. It reminded me of the essence of our national spirit — unity in diversity.

I believe the reason this video gained so much attention wasn’t just because of Trump himself, but because of what it represented. It showed a rare side of diplomacy — where music and culture break down barriers that politics often build. Watching Trump sway to our local rhythm symbolized mutual respect and cultural connection. It showed that Malaysia isn’t just another stop on a political tour, but a country with heart, energy, and a sense of joy that’s contagious.

As a Malaysian, I also felt proud that our local traditions and hospitality were seen by millions around the world. The smiles, the dance, and the lively music represented who we are as a people — friendly, welcoming, and proud of our identity. The world saw that Malaysia is not a “third world” country, but a nation with class, culture, and confidence.

The global reaction to the video also made me realize something important — people everywhere appreciate authenticity. When world leaders take a moment to enjoy and respect local traditions, it builds goodwill and lasting impressions. Malaysia’s image on the international stage became brighter, not through politics or speeches, but through something simple: a dance.

In the end, that viral clip wasn’t just about Trump. It was about us — Malaysians — showing the world that our culture can unite, our warmth can inspire, and our country is one that others will always remember fondly. Watching that video made me proud to say, “Yes, that’s my Malaysia.”

"EVERYONE THINKS MALAYSIA IS 3RD WORLD" - AMERICANS SHOCKED BY CLEAN HIGHWAYS

When I read about Americans being surprised by Malaysia’s clean highways during former President Donald Trump’s ASEAN visit, I wasn’t shocked — I was proud. As a Malaysian, I have always believed that the term third world country no longer represents who we are. That label, created during the Cold War, was meant to categorize nations that were neither aligned with the West nor the Soviet bloc. Yet, decades later, people still use it as a way to measure how “developed” or “civilized” a nation is. The truth is, Malaysia has far outgrown that stereotype.

The viral footage of Trump’s presidential motorcade cruising along the Maju Expressway revealed highways so clean, wide, and modern that many Americans were shocked. One even commented that our roads looked better than those in Charlotte, North Carolina — a developed city in one of the world’s richest countries. That comparison speaks volumes. It challenges the long-standing Western narrative that countries in Southeast Asia are underdeveloped or dirty. The fact is, Malaysia’s infrastructure has been improving steadily for decades. Our highways are among the best in Asia, maintained with efficiency and care that rival developed nations.

For years, Western media has painted nations like Malaysia with a single brush — poor, chaotic, and corrupt. They rarely show the modern cities, the world-class airports, or the advanced public transportation systems we’ve built. Instead, they focus on rural areas or outdated images that no longer reflect reality. That’s why when foreigners visit Kuala Lumpur for the first time, they are often stunned. They see gleaming skyscrapers like the Petronas Twin Towers, bustling urban life, and roads that are smooth, clean, and efficient. It’s a wake-up call for those who still think of us as being stuck in the past.

To me, Malaysia is not a “third world” country — we are a developing nation with strong ambition and potential. Yes, we face challenges: corruption scandals, traffic jams, and the occasional inefficiency in governance. But which country doesn’t? Even in the United States, you can find poverty, homelessness, and crumbling infrastructure. The difference is, our problems are often exaggerated by outsiders, while our achievements are overlooked. What matters most is our direction — and Malaysia is clearly moving forward.

Over the years, Malaysia has made remarkable progress in technology, digital innovation, and education. Our cities are becoming smarter, our public facilities more inclusive, and our youth more globally minded. The government and private sector have invested heavily in sustainable infrastructure, ensuring our highways and public spaces remain clean and safe. The Maju Expressway, in particular, is a symbol of that progress — representing efficiency, modernization, and pride in national development.

When foreigners express shock at how clean or advanced Malaysia is, I don’t feel offended. Instead, I see it as an opportunity to change their perception. It’s a reminder that the world still has much to learn about who we are. Each time a visitor is surprised by our modern lifestyle, it becomes a silent victory for us Malaysians — proof that we have surpassed expectations.

We are a nation that blends tradition with progress. We can enjoy nasi lemak at a roadside stall in the morning and attend a global tech conference in the afternoon. We can preserve our cultural heritage while embracing digital transformation. That is what makes Malaysia special — our ability to move forward without losing our identity.

So yes, when I see those videos of clean highways and hear foreigners gasp in disbelief, I smile. Because behind every clean road and modern building lies the hard work of millions of Malaysians who take pride in their country. We may not be perfect, but we are progressing — and that progress deserves recognition. Malaysia is no longer just a developing country trying to catch up. We are a proud, capable nation standing tall on the global stage.

It’s time the world retires the outdated label of “third world” and starts seeing Malaysia for what it truly is: a vibrant, modern, and forward-looking nation that’s paving its own road to success — one clean highway at a time.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU:

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : OUR CHILDREN: A TRUST AND LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE

As a principal, I have often observed that the success of a school is not merely measured by the academic achievements of its students, but by something far deeper — the strength of the partnership between home and school. Our children are not simply learners in a classroom; they are individuals in the process of self-discovery, finding their purpose, and shaping the values that will define their future. Therefore, educating them is a profound trust — one that rests not only on the shoulders of teachers but also in the hearts of every parent who serves as the first and most influential guide in a child’s life. This trust is not just a duty; it is an act of devotion that calls for sincerity, patience, and unwavering love.

Parents are the first educators of every child. The way we speak, act, and respond becomes the mirror through which they learn about life. When children see their parents respecting knowledge, valuing effort, and honouring teachers, they too will grow with those same principles. In this regard, the school plays a complementary role to the education that begins at home. Thus, strong collaboration between parents and teachers is vital — not only through attendance at meetings or school events, but also through emotional support, open communication, and mutual trust in the school’s efforts to nurture their children.

At times, we may measure a child’s success solely by their examination results, yet true success goes beyond grades — it lies in character, discipline, and integrity. A successful child is not merely one who scores straight A’s, but one who respects others, dares to try, and never gives up in the face of challenges. Parental support in developing these traits is crucial. When children realise that they are loved and valued not only for their achievements but also for their effort and sincerity, they will grow with confidence, resilience, and a strong moral foundation.

The school, on the other hand, provides a safe and nurturing environment for children to learn and flourish. However, without encouragement from home, the school’s efforts will be incomplete. Parents should be actively involved in their child’s development — by asking about their day, listening to their feelings, and working together to overcome challenges. A harmonious relationship between parents and school builds a strong support network, allowing every child to feel cared for and appreciated by a community that truly values education.

Ultimately, we must remember that our children do not belong solely to us — they are a divine trust, entrusted to us to guide and shape. They are the heirs of our nation’s future — inheritors of its values, culture, and dignity. Our responsibility is to ensure that they grow into individuals who are knowledgeable, well-mannered, and noble in spirit. Let us join hands and hearts, united in our mission to raise a generation that shines not only in intellect but also in virtue. Together, we can nurture every child into a precious gem that will illuminate the future of our people and our nation.

Peaceful Today,                                          Beautiful the Tomorrow to Come

We are often trapped in the shadow of a future that has yet to arrive, to the point that we forget to truly live in the present. Our minds are filled with questions: “What if I fail? What will people say? How will my family see me?” Day after day, we busy ourselves with worries about things that have not even happened, until eventually we grow weary from the weight of our own imagination. Yet the future never asks us to know everything in advance. It never demands definite answers. What the future really wants is our honesty in the steps we take today—honesty with ourselves, honesty in our efforts, and honesty in our intentions. Too often we forget that the future is not built upon empty dreams, but is born out of the small choices we make in this very moment. The more restless we become, the more blurred our vision of the true path ahead, and the more we lose the ability to appreciate the present that is unfolding before us.

If we truly desire a peaceful future, then we must first learn to cultivate that peace within ourselves today. Peace does not come from rushing headlong towards something still far away, but from being fully aware in each small step we take. Learn to value every breath we draw, every step we make, and every prayer we raise, for each of these is enough to carry us forward. Never underestimate the small things: the breath we take today is the energy for tomorrow, the step we take today is the footprint towards the future, and the prayer we whisper today is the light that will guide our way. Life is not about running endlessly, but about walking with awareness, ensuring that each step carries meaning. Therefore, live with full consciousness in the present, for only then will the future be built with greater beauty, greater peace, and greater truth in who we truly are.

Tranquillus Hodie, Pulchrum Cras Venturum

Quid familia mea sentiet?” Cotidie anxii sumus de rebus nondum factis, donec tandem umbris imaginationis nostrae ipsi fatigamur. At vero futurum numquam postulavit ut omnia sciremus; numquam certa responsa poposcit.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : MOTIVATION FOR SCHOOL LEADERS

Being a school leader is never a simple duty. It is a calling that demands resilience, vision, and a steadfast heart. The role extends far beyond ensuring the smooth running of daily administration; it encompasses shaping the culture, values, and direction of the entire school community. Leadership, especially in education, is not about popularity. It is about responsibility, conviction, and the courage to make decisions that may not always be liked, but are necessary for the good of students, teachers, and society at large.

Leadership Is More Than Popularity

A true school leader must never fall into the trap of trying to please everyone. If popularity becomes the guiding principle, the core mission of education will be compromised. There are moments when leaders must enforce discipline, raise academic standards, or introduce reforms that are initially met with resistance. Such decisions may be unpopular, but they are crucial for the long-term benefit of the school. A leader’s worth is not measured by applause or approval but by the strength of character to stand firm for what is right.

Becoming a Beacon of Light

A school leader must be a source of inspiration—a beacon of light that guides teachers, staff, and students towards excellence. Leadership is not just about policies or strategies; it is about modelling integrity, fairness, and commitment. When a leader demonstrates discipline, positivity, and sincerity, these values ripple throughout the school community. Just as a torch illuminates the path for others, a leader’s character and example light the way forward for the entire institution.

Courage to Lead Change

Education today is evolving rapidly, shaped by technology, globalisation, and new approaches to teaching and learning. A school leader must therefore be bold enough to embrace change and innovation. Introducing digital tools, adopting modern pedagogical methods, or practising data-driven decision-making requires courage and vision. Failure should not be feared, for it is a stepping stone to growth. It is far better to attempt new initiatives and learn from mistakes than to cling to outdated practices that hinder progress.

Building Trust and Collaboration

Though it is impossible to satisfy everyone, building trust remains essential. Effective school leaders nurture open communication with teachers, staff, students, and parents. By listening with empathy and respecting diverse perspectives, they build a culture of trust and inclusivity. True leadership is not about commanding authority but about fostering collaboration. When people feel valued and involved, they are more likely to support even the most difficult decisions.

Staying True to the Mission of Education

Amid challenges, criticism, and distractions, school leaders must remain focused on their central mission: to educate and shape future generations. Leadership in education is not only about raising examination results but also about nurturing well-rounded individuals with integrity, discipline, and resilience. Every trial faced by a leader—whether financial constraints, resistance to change, or societal pressure—should be seen as an opportunity to strengthen the school and sharpen one’s leadership.

Conclusion

To lead a school is to embark on a journey of sacrifice and service. It is not a path lined with constant praise, but one that demands perseverance, courage, and vision. If a leader only seeks to be liked, their impact will remain shallow. But if they stand firm in principle, make decisions with conviction, and consistently pursue the noble mission of education, they may not be liked by all, but they will earn respect from all. And respect, more than fleeting popularity, is the foundation of true and lasting leadership.

Appoint Full-Time Boarding Wardens to Tackle Bullying in Schools

The challenges of managing boarding schools today are vastly different from those of the past. Where once boarding school students were known for discipline, values, and camaraderie, the situation has shifted dramatically. The unchecked influence of social media and the digital environment has eroded the sense of humanity in many young people. Bullying in schools is no longer a trivial or isolated issue—it has escalated to the point where lives have been lost, and cases have ended up in court with offenders still in their teenage years.

This is a bitter reality that must be confronted. As a serious step towards addressing it, it is time for the government to consider the appointment of full-time boarding wardens in every residential school.

Full-Time Wardens: An Urgent Need

Boarding schools can no longer rely entirely on teachers to shoulder the responsibility of supervising students in hostels. Teachers are already burdened with a host of duties—teaching, preparing lessons, marking work, attending meetings, and managing administrative tasks. Although some receive allowances for acting as wardens, many teachers understandably decline these roles as they interfere with their primary responsibilities and reduce precious family time after school hours.

For this reason, boarding wardens must be appointed as permanent, full-time positions. These wardens are not merely caretakers, but dedicated officers who live among the students, maintain offices within the hostel premises, and take full responsibility for monitoring behaviour, safety, and welfare on a daily basis.

The Need for Both Male and Female Wardens

Every boarding school should have at least two wardens—one male and one female. This ensures that supervision is appropriate and effective across both genders. The presence of wardens who are permanently stationed in the hostels would not only deter bullying but also foster a sense of security and belonging. Students would know that someone is always available to listen, to guide, and to act if necessary.

Safeguarding Teachers’ Focus

Teachers must be allowed to concentrate on their primary role—educating and nurturing their students. Adding the heavy responsibility of hostel wardenship only dilutes their teaching effectiveness and undermines their work-life balance. The situation is already pressing, with most schools conducting extra classes to counter the decline in academic performance following the abolition of public assessments such as the Primary School Evaluation Test (UPSR) and the Lower Secondary Assessment (PMR/PT3). With these new pressures, burdening teachers with hostel supervision is unfair and unsustainable.

Conclusion

Given the current circumstances, appointing permanent full-time boarding wardens is no longer an option but an urgent necessity. Their presence would ensure consistent monitoring, stronger discipline, and a safer environment where bullying could be tackled effectively. Meanwhile, teachers would be free to return to their rightful focus: providing quality education in the classroom.

If we are truly committed to protecting our young people from violence, dehumanisation, and destructive influences, then establishing a professional warden system in boarding schools is the most logical step forward. The future of our students, their safety, and the reputation of our education system depend on such bold action.

The School Principal: A Challenging Calling

Being a school principal is not merely about holding a title or a position of authority. It is a profound trust, an amanah, that demands dedication, wisdom, and extraordinary patience. To many outsiders, the role may seem prestigious—an office of one’s own, the power to make decisions, the respect of the community. Yet behind that perception lies a reality far greater: the principal is not simply an administrator, but a leader, a teacher, a motivator, and above all, a guardian of the future of hundreds, if not thousands, of young lives.

Leading by Action, Not Just by Words

The renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell once said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” These words remind me constantly that a principal’s duty is not to rule from behind a desk, but to lead by example. If I expect my teachers to be dedicated, I must first show dedication. If I expect my students to be disciplined, I must model discipline myself. True leadership is not born of instructions; it is born of action, of walking the very path one asks others to follow.

The Academic Challenge

One of the greatest responsibilities of a principal is to ensure that academic standards are upheld and improved. But academic success is not only about examination scores or grades. Albert Einstein once said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” That insight carries deep meaning for me as a school leader. It reminds me that my role is not only to push for higher marks, but to inspire teachers to nurture curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in every student. True education is about shaping minds that can question, innovate, and lead.

Discipline with Wisdom

Beyond academics, discipline among students presents another immense challenge. Today’s digital age offers countless opportunities, but it also brings with it new risks—cyberbullying, gadget addiction, and social distractions that threaten focus and character. As a principal, I cannot afford to rely solely on punishment. I must first seek to understand my students, to uncover the roots of their struggles, and to guide them with empathy and firmness in equal measure. Discipline is not about instilling fear, but about nurturing respect and responsibility. The art lies in finding balance—neither too harsh to alienate, nor too lenient to invite disregard.

Bridging Teachers, Parents, and the Community

A school does not exist in isolation. Its success depends on the strength of its connections. As principal, I must be the bridge between teachers, students, parents, and the wider community. Strong ties with the Parent-Teacher Association are essential in building trust and unity of purpose. Tan Sri Musa Mohamad, a respected Malaysian education leader, once reminded us: “Successful education is the result of cooperation between all parties—teachers, students, parents, and the community.” Those words echo powerfully, for they underline the truth that no principal, however capable, can succeed alone. True progress is always collective.

Bearing Pressure with Strength

The life of a principal is not free of strain. There are days when criticism arrives uninvited, when decisions must be made that please some and disappoint others. Yet this is the reality of leadership. Criticism, I have learnt, need not be a weapon to wound—it can be a mirror for growth. If I, as principal, cannot control my own emotions, how then can I expect my teachers or students to remain steady? Calmness in a leader is not a luxury; it is a necessity. A principal must be the anchor in storms, the steady hand that reassures others that all will be well.

Conclusion: A Noble Mission

Yes, being a school principal is a demanding, even daunting, responsibility. But within that challenge lies great nobility. I am not merely managing a school—I am shaping the destiny of a generation. Every decision I make, every word I speak, and every action I take carries weight beyond my own life.

This role is not about authority, but about service. It is not about personal recognition, but about collective success. The trials are many, but they are what give this calling its meaning. For in guiding teachers, inspiring students, and engaging parents, I know I am playing a part in building a better nation, one classroom at a time.

And that is the true honour of being a principal.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : THE TRUE ASSESSOR OF A TEACHER

Who is the real evaluator of a teacher? Many may believe that it is the headmaster, the inspector, or the examination results. Yet in truth, the genuine assessor is the student. It is the student who, through daily interaction, forms a silent yet powerful judgement of the teacher’s character, competence, and dedication. Sadly, many teachers remain unaware that they are constantly being assessed whenever they step into the classroom or engage in even the simplest of conversations with their pupils.

A teacher’s ability to communicate effectively is central to this evaluation. Words carry weight, and the way they are used can inspire or discourage. When speaking to students, teachers must employ polite, respectful, and clear language. Patience is essential, especially when handling obstinate or mischievous pupils. Raising one’s voice in anger or using phrases with negative connotations does not foster respect. Rather, it erodes trust and diminishes the teacher’s stature in the eyes of the students. Children may forgive occasional mistakes, but they never forget the tone or attitude of the adults who shape their daily lives.

Teachers must remember that they are examples, not only in the knowledge they impart but also in the way they live. Every gesture, expression, and word becomes a lesson in itself. Students are not passive recipients of information; they are observers and storytellers. They carry what they see and hear into their homes, recounting to their parents the behaviour of their teachers. If a teacher consistently demonstrates kindness, fairness, and sincerity, parents too will develop confidence in that teacher’s guidance. Conversely, negative behaviour will just as quickly travel from classroom to family dinner table, tarnishing the teacher’s image.

The classroom, therefore, must be seen as sacred time. The teacher’s primary responsibility is to instruct, guide, and inspire. When lessons are conducted with dedication and honesty, the benefits to students are immeasurable. They not only absorb knowledge more effectively but also develop a respect for the subject and the person teaching it. Indeed, students often perform exceptionally well in subjects taught by teachers who are sincere and passionate. They strive harder, take pride in their achievements, and are motivated to learn.

This leads to an observable pattern: in examination results, there is frequently an imbalance. Students achieve many A grades in subjects where the teacher is committed, enthusiastic, and compassionate, but their performance in other subjects may be mediocre. Such disparities cannot be explained solely by a student’s aptitude; rather, they point to the influence of the teacher’s approach. School authorities would do well to investigate these differences more carefully. Behind every statistic lies a story of how a teacher’s attitude and communication style shaped the motivation of their students.

This reflection, however, is not meant as a criticism of teachers. I myself am a teacher, and I understand the pressures and complexities of the profession. Much happens in a school day that can test patience and resilience. Yet it is precisely because of this that regular self-reflection is necessary. We must examine our flaws, acknowledge our weaknesses, and make conscious efforts to improve. A good teacher is not one who never errs, but one who strives to learn from mistakes and grow.

The world has changed drastically, and so too has parenting. Parents today raise their children differently from those of past generations. Consequently, students’ perceptions of teachers have shifted. Respect is no longer automatic; it must be earned through consistent integrity, skill, and empathy. This reality demands that all teachers develop and practise sound communication skills. Self-control is vital. A careless word, an impatient reaction, or a moment of anger may seem small, but in the eyes of a student, it can become a defining memory. Negative behaviours, once displayed, easily become spectacles that students repeat and exaggerate, diminishing the authority of the teacher.

Ultimately, teachers must recognise that they are not only transmitters of knowledge but also shapers of character. Every interaction contributes to the silent assessment carried out by students. To be found worthy in this evaluation, teachers must cultivate patience, compassion, and humility. They must embrace communication as an art that inspires rather than wounds. In doing so, they will not only gain the respect of their pupils but also ignite in them the motivation to succeed. The true measure of a teacher’s success lies not only in examination grades, but in the enduring respect and gratitude of the students they once taught.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU: READING CULTURE AS THE FOUNDATION OF MATURE THINKING

Reading culture is indeed a good culture to produce knowledgeable people who can think maturely and logically. People who enjoy reading scientific books and keeping up with current issues have more refined thinking compared to those who are lazy to read. People who are lazy to read easily believe stories that are told to them orally by others. This situation happens in schools. Teachers who teach language subjects like me can detect this problem very quickly. When writing essays, students often lack ideas and end up repeating the same points. They cannot explain the content of the essay well because their knowledge of the issues in the questions is too limited.

The influence of social media, which displays a lot of entertainment and silly jokes, causes many students to have no time to read. They enjoy reading stories on social media, such as news about divorced celebrities, Korean artists visiting Malaysia, netizens’ comments, and watching pointless videos. They spend a lot of time interacting and watching videos on social media. They are not like the previous generation who enjoyed going to the library in the evenings and at weekends. As a result, they lack knowledge about current issues that are often asked in essay questions. For example, the issue of environmental pollution can lead to the spread of infectious diseases. Although this issue is simple, many students fail to answer this question properly.

This situation occurs because they do not like to read new knowledge found in academic magazines, textbooks, and newspapers. As a result, their knowledge is very limited. Because of that, they cannot write mature essays and therefore obtain very low marks. If they are not interested in reading scientific books, they will fall behind. This reading culture should begin at home from a young age. What I often see are parents and children engrossed in looking at their smartphone screens all the time. They do not communicate with each other. They are busy writing and reading messages on WhatsApp, TikTok, WeChat, Telegram, and Facebook. Because of that, they do not have time to read.

I always chat with students about their activities at home after coming back from school. They tell me that they spend their time playing online games. There are four popular types of online games they are interested in, namely Ragnarok Online, Dota/War, Counter Strike, and Command and Conquer: Red Alert. They play these online games until morning. As a result, they do not get enough sleep. The majority of students addicted to these online games are male, although female students are also involved.

In my opinion, reading culture is very important if we want to produce many intelligent people. The government needs to organise more programmes to encourage people to buy and read books. Schools in our country should instil the love of reading among students more intensively. If they do not read a lot, they will definitely fail to answer questions that require critical thinking. Exam questions now focus more on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Students who do not like to read will definitely be unable to give the correct answers. They write immature responses.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : UNDERSTANDING AND GUIDING CHALLENGING STUDENTS: A TEACHER'S REFLETION

As we grow older, maturity shapes the way we act and respond to challenges. We are no longer childish in our decisions, and our perspectives become more balanced. As a teacher with over two decades of experience, I have learned that teaching is not only about delivering knowledge but also about understanding students’ attitudes and learning how to win their hearts.

In the early years of my career, I struggled with “naughty” or disruptive students. My instinct was to scold them, isolate them, and ignore their behaviour. I believed that those who refused to study hard deserved to fail. If they did not pass their exams, I felt no regret. Like many other teachers, I assumed discipline problems stemmed from laziness or disinterest. However, over time, through self-reflection, I realised that such an approach was limited and unfair.

The Turning Point

My outlook began to change when I made an effort to engage with these students on a personal level. Instead of pushing them away, I approached them. I talked with them, shared food and drinks, and gradually they began to open up about their lives. Their stories were often heartbreaking: family conflicts, financial struggles, neglect, or abuse. Many acted out at school not because they rejected learning, but because they were searching for attention and care.

This revelation reminded me of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1943), which emphasises that basic psychological and emotional needs must be met before individuals can focus on higher goals such as academic achievement. Without love, safety, and belonging, learning becomes secondary. Punishing students without understanding their context only deepens their sense of isolation.

Building Relationships with Students

The closer I became to these students, the more I understood them. I began to see them not as troublemakers but as children in need of guidance and compassion. I treated them as if they were my own children, offering encouragement and instilling hope for the future. Over time, I witnessed their transformation. Students once labelled as “naughty” developed into respectful young people who remembered their teachers with gratitude. They greeted me politely even years later, never holding grudges despite the scoldings they endured.

This experience aligns with Noddings’ (2005) theory of the ethic of care, which stresses that teaching is fundamentally relational. Students are more likely to thrive when they feel genuinely cared for and valued as individuals. By humanising my interactions with students, I saw positive changes not only in their behaviour but also in their academic progress.

A Broader Philosophy of Education

After 26 years as a teacher, I no longer differentiate between “good” and “bad” students. I believe every child deserves equal attention and support to succeed. My responsibility is to help all students discover their potential, regardless of their background or behaviour. This perspective echoes the philosophy of holistic education, which views success not merely in terms of academic performance but in developing character, resilience, and self-awareness (Miller, 2007).

I now spend more time motivating students and encouraging them to see education as a pathway to a prosperous life. I remind them that success in life is not determined solely by achieving straight A’s. Rather, it lies in cultivating critical thinking, noble values, and self-respect. Even if they pursue ordinary jobs, they can still live fulfilling lives if they know who they are and love themselves. This aligns with contemporary educational research, which highlights the importance of social-emotional learning (OECD, 2021).

Conclusion

In conclusion, my journey as a teacher has taught me that every student, no matter how disruptive, has a story. What they need is not rejection but guidance, care, and hope. Teachers must look beyond exam grades to nurture the whole person, helping students develop into individuals who are confident, responsible, and compassionate.

I continue to pray that all my students will find direction in their lives. Teaching, for me, is not simply a profession but a calling — an opportunity to shape lives with sincerity and love. True education is not only about producing scholars but about producing human beings who can live meaningfully and with dignity.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : THE LASTING POWER OF A TEACHER ADVICE

Teachers hold a sacred role in shaping the lives of their students. Beyond the classroom walls, beyond the textbooks and examinations, there lies a deeper responsibility: to guide, to nurture, and to offer words of wisdom that will help young people grow into responsible, mature, and morally upright individuals. Advice is the thread that connects a teacher’s heart to a student’s mind, and even if students may not immediately recognise its value, those words will one day resurface as guiding lights in their journey through life.

It is natural for students, especially the young, to resist advice. Adolescence often brings with it a sense of independence and the desire to challenge authority. When teachers offer reminders about discipline, kindness, respect, or hard work, some students may roll their eyes, dismiss the message, or even laugh it off. But teachers must not be discouraged by this temporary rejection. Advice, when given sincerely and consistently, has a way of planting seeds in the mind. Though it may not sprout overnight, with time and life’s experiences, those seeds begin to grow. A student who once ignored a teacher’s advice may, years later, find themselves echoing the same words to their own children or colleagues.

The truth is that young people are often immature. They lack the ability to fully distinguish between right and wrong, between actions that build their future and those that may destroy it. They are easily influenced by peers, by social media, and by fleeting pleasures. In such a stage of life, they need strong voices of reason—voices that come not from celebrities or influencers, but from the adults who stand beside them every day. Teachers, therefore, cannot afford to be silent. If we stop advising, correcting, and reminding our students, we leave them vulnerable to confusion and poor decision-making. Silence from a teacher is not neutral; it is harmful, for it deprives students of the moral compass they so desperately need.

Teachers are not only instructors; they are role models. Students observe not just what we say, but how we act, how we treat others, and how we respond to challenges. This is why our advice carries such weight. When a teacher speaks, the student does not only hear the words but also recalls the teacher’s integrity, patience, and sincerity. Teachers are often remembered not for the lessons they taught in mathematics or grammar, but for the moments they gave guidance, encouragement, or moral reminders. Such moments become etched in memory, shaping a student’s worldview long after they leave school.

The calling of a teacher is a divine trust. We are entrusted with young souls at their most vulnerable stage. God, in His wisdom, chose us for this role because He knows that teachers possess patience, compassion, and a pure heart. We are not perfect, but we carry within us the ability to see beyond grades and achievements, to care for the human being behind the student. Every piece of advice we give, every gentle correction, is not merely discipline but an act of love. To guide a student is to serve God, for in shaping them, we are building the leaders, parents, and citizens of tomorrow.

Advice is powerful because it transcends time. A teacher’s words may not bear fruit immediately, but they linger in the heart, waiting for the right season. One day, when a student faces a difficult choice or a moral dilemma, the advice once given will return, offering clarity and direction. It is in those moments that students truly realise the value of their teachers’ persistence.

Therefore, we must never tire of advising, guiding, and nurturing. To stop is to abandon our duty, and the consequences for our students’ futures would be dire. Even if they resist today, tomorrow they will thank us. Teachers must believe in the unseen harvest of their words, trusting that God has placed them in this role for a reason. Advice may seem small, but in reality, it is a legacy—a gift that endures long after the classroom is left behind.

In conclusion, teachers must continue to advise without ceasing. We are more than educators; we are guardians of young hearts and minds. Our advice is not wasted, for one day, every word spoken in sincerity will prove its worth. To teach is to plant seeds of wisdom, and to advise is to water them with love and patience. God made us teachers because He knew we could carry this noble responsibility with a pure soul. And so, we must never stop, for the future of our students depends on it.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : THE EXPERIENCE OF HAVING SCAMMER-TYPE FRIENDS

I write sincerely from the heart, sharing an experience that has troubled me deeply: the experience of having scammer-type friends. Many people talk about being scammed online, through emails or phone calls, but what about when the scammer is someone you consider a friend? This is my story, and perhaps it is also yours.

I have a friend who has made it a habit to ask me for money. At first, I did not think much of it. Friendship, after all, means helping one another. When he asked for RM20 or RM50, I willingly obliged. On some occasions, he even asked for RM100 or more. Out of kindness, and because I valued the friendship, I gave him what he asked. But over time, a thought began to grow in my mind: what if I was not the only one? If every month he asked for money from several of his friends, the amount he collected would be substantial. Suddenly, I realised that this was not simply borrowing—it was a pattern of manipulation. This is what I classify as a scammer friend.

The problem with scammer-type friends is that their deception is subtle. They do not snatch money from you directly, nor do they make wild threats. Instead, they appeal to your trust, to your kindness, and to the social bond of friendship. They exploit your sense of loyalty for their personal gain. And because the amounts they request are often small, like RM20 or RM50, you are tempted to believe it is harmless. But when you add it up, the figure becomes shocking. Imagine a person asking RM50 from ten friends every month. That is RM500 a month, more than some people earn in additional part-time work. And yet, the scammer does not work hard for this income; he simply manipulates his friendships.

What makes this worse is that such a friend is not a true friend at all. If you were in trouble, would he rush to help you? I doubt it. He is a friend not because he values your companionship, but because he values your wallet. Friendship, in its truest sense, should be built on trust, respect, and mutual support. A scammer friend destroys that trust and reduces the relationship to a financial transaction. Slowly, you begin to feel used, as though your generosity has been taken for granted.

I have begun to reflect seriously on this matter. Life is too short to carry people who only bring weight and worry. Friends should uplift us, not drain us. If we allow scammer-type friends to stay in our lives, we allow them to continue deceiving us. They make our lives more difficult, and in return we gain nothing but frustration. Even if the amount they ask for is “only” RM50 or RM100, the principle remains the same: it is not right. True friendship is not measured by money, but by sincerity.

One of the most revealing things about such people is how they present themselves. On social media, they look perfectly fine. They post photos of outings, entertainment, and luxuries. It makes me wonder: is the money I gave being used for enjoyment, while I felt guilty for not helping? Our sincere intention to support them is, in reality, turned into their opportunity for laughter. They mock our kindness, perhaps not openly, but in their hearts they feel victorious because they have managed to deceive us.

The saddest part is that when misfortune strikes us, scammer-type friends will not be there. When we are in hardship, they will vanish, because their connection to us was never genuine. They do not see us as friends but as resources. And when the resource dries up, so too does their loyalty.

I share this experience not with bitterness, but with hope. My hope is that others will recognise this pattern early and protect themselves. Friendship should never be reduced to exploitation. We must learn to identify those who are true companions and those who are merely playing the role of friends for personal benefit. As for me, I am beginning to distance myself from such people. It is not easy, but it is necessary. Life should be filled with relationships that bring growth, support, and happiness, not those that drain us of money, energy, and peace.

So, to anyone reading this: be cautious. Reflect on your friendships. Be generous, yes, but also wise. And if you discover a scammer-type friend in your life, do not be afraid to walk away. You deserve better.

MY MESSAGE TO YOU : THE VALUE OF PRIVACY IN MORDEN LIFE

One of the most important lessons I have learned in life is not to reveal everything about myself to others. The more we disclose, the more vulnerable we become to envy, malice, and misinterpretation. Human nature can be unpredictable; people who seem to listen sympathetically may, in fact, harbour resentment or ill-will. As Goffman (1959) argued in his seminal work on self-presentation, individuals manage the information they disclose in order to protect their social identity and preserve dignity.

This does not mean that genuine friendship does not exist. There are indeed honest and good-hearted people who sincerely wish us well. However, discernment is essential. True friendships do not require constant contact; sometimes it is enough to exchange greetings once every two weeks or even once a month. Healthy friendships are not measured by frequency of communication, but by sincerity and trust.

Setting Boundaries in Communication

A useful strategy is to set boundaries when conversations become intrusive. If someone asks too many personal questions, one can redirect the discussion to neutral topics such as football, films, recipes, or health tips. This approach maintains sociability while protecting personal privacy. According to Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management Theory (2002), people draw “privacy boundaries” to regulate the flow of information. When these boundaries are crossed, trust may erode, leading to conflict.

From my own experience, individuals who are overly curious about private matters often prove to be the least trustworthy. Friendships can flourish in shared activities such as playing futsal or going to the gym without requiring deep personal disclosures. Maintaining a balance between openness and discretion is key to sustaining relationships while preserving one’s dignity.

Balancing Positive and Negative Thinking

Life is undeniably difficult without the wisdom to manage oneself. It is important to adopt both positive and negative modes of thinking depending on the situation. Positive thinking allows us to remain hopeful and resilient in the face of adversity. Negative thinking, when applied constructively, helps us to remain cautious and realistic. As Seligman (2011) highlighted in his work on positive psychology, authentic well-being requires not only optimism but also the capacity for critical judgement.

Above all, we must cultivate self-love. People who prioritise their own well-being and self-respect are more likely to succeed in the long run. Self-love is not narcissism but a recognition of personal worth. If we do not value our own privacy and dignity, others will not respect them either. Our life stories are our absolute right; they belong to us alone.

The Dangers of Oversharing in the Digital Age

Letting others speculate is often wiser than offering explanations. Time itself will reveal the answers. The price of self-respect is high, and we should not allow others to distort our stories simply because we volunteered them too freely. This is especially true in the digital age, where information is disseminated at the tap of a finger.

Unlike the past, when messages were delivered by pigeons or tin-can telephones, today’s communication is instant and global. A casual remark shared on social media can spiral into controversy, misrepresentation, or even online harassment. Boyd (2014) has shown how the permanence and visibility of digital content amplify the risks of oversharing. What seems harmless today may have unforeseen consequences tomorrow.

Conclusion

In conclusion, guarding our privacy is not an act of secrecy but of self-preservation. By managing what we share and with whom, we protect our dignity, relationships, and future. Friendships need not be built upon constant disclosures but upon mutual respect and sincerity. In a world where information travels faster than ever, discretion has become an essential virtue.

To protect our independence, mental health, and reputation, we must remember this simple principle: not every story needs to be told, and not every listener deserves to hear it.
