MY MESSAGE TO YOU : THE TRUE ASSESSOR OF A TEACHER

Who is the real evaluator of a teacher? Many may believe that it is the headmaster, the inspector, or the examination results. Yet in truth, the genuine assessor is the student. It is the student who, through daily interaction, forms a silent yet powerful judgement of the teacher’s character, competence, and dedication. Sadly, many teachers remain unaware that they are constantly being assessed whenever they step into the classroom or engage in even the simplest of conversations with their pupils.

A teacher’s ability to communicate effectively is central to this evaluation. Words carry weight, and the way they are used can inspire or discourage. When speaking to students, teachers must employ polite, respectful, and clear language. Patience is essential, especially when handling obstinate or mischievous pupils. Raising one’s voice in anger or using phrases with negative connotations does not foster respect. Rather, it erodes trust and diminishes the teacher’s stature in the eyes of the students. Children may forgive occasional mistakes, but they never forget the tone or attitude of the adults who shape their daily lives.

Teachers must remember that they are examples, not only in the knowledge they impart but also in the way they live. Every gesture, expression, and word becomes a lesson in itself. Students are not passive recipients of information; they are observers and storytellers. They carry what they see and hear into their homes, recounting to their parents the behaviour of their teachers. If a teacher consistently demonstrates kindness, fairness, and sincerity, parents too will develop confidence in that teacher’s guidance. Conversely, negative behaviour will just as quickly travel from classroom to family dinner table, tarnishing the teacher’s image.

The classroom, therefore, must be seen as sacred time. The teacher’s primary responsibility is to instruct, guide, and inspire. When lessons are conducted with dedication and honesty, the benefits to students are immeasurable. They not only absorb knowledge more effectively but also develop a respect for the subject and the person teaching it. Indeed, students often perform exceptionally well in subjects taught by teachers who are sincere and passionate. They strive harder, take pride in their achievements, and are motivated to learn.

This leads to an observable pattern: in examination results, there is frequently an imbalance. Students achieve many A grades in subjects where the teacher is committed, enthusiastic, and compassionate, but their performance in other subjects may be mediocre. Such disparities cannot be explained solely by a student’s aptitude; rather, they point to the influence of the teacher’s approach. School authorities would do well to investigate these differences more carefully. Behind every statistic lies a story of how a teacher’s attitude and communication style shaped the motivation of their students.

This reflection, however, is not meant as a criticism of teachers. I myself am a teacher, and I understand the pressures and complexities of the profession. Much happens in a school day that can test patience and resilience. Yet it is precisely because of this that regular self-reflection is necessary. We must examine our flaws, acknowledge our weaknesses, and make conscious efforts to improve. A good teacher is not one who never errs, but one who strives to learn from mistakes and grow.

The world has changed drastically, and so too has parenting. Parents today raise their children differently from those of past generations. Consequently, students’ perceptions of teachers have shifted. Respect is no longer automatic; it must be earned through consistent integrity, skill, and empathy. This reality demands that all teachers develop and practise sound communication skills. Self-control is vital. A careless word, an impatient reaction, or a moment of anger may seem small, but in the eyes of a student, it can become a defining memory. Negative behaviours, once displayed, easily become spectacles that students repeat and exaggerate, diminishing the authority of the teacher.

Ultimately, teachers must recognise that they are not only transmitters of knowledge but also shapers of character. Every interaction contributes to the silent assessment carried out by students. To be found worthy in this evaluation, teachers must cultivate patience, compassion, and humility. They must embrace communication as an art that inspires rather than wounds. In doing so, they will not only gain the respect of their pupils but also ignite in them the motivation to succeed. The true measure of a teacher’s success lies not only in examination grades, but in the enduring respect and gratitude of the students they once taught.
